New San Diego Port Chairman Wants To Focus On The ‘Blue Economy’
San Diego’s economic development is often seen in the light of the health of small business start-ups, research, or biotech industries. But there may be another major economic engine lying in plain sight. Some are calling it the blue economy.
New plans for Seaport Village unveiled
An earthquake fault line under Seaport Village has led to a major rework of plans for what will likely become a San Diego landmark.
Plans for the nearly 40-year old shopping and recreation area include a 480-foot observation tower that, according to the San Diego Unified Port District, could make the city’s skyline more distinctive. Redevelopment will also include hotels, offices and an aquarium.
Why San Diego should foster ocean economy
Ports have always been essential to civilization, to the prospering of society and its progress. Ports promote commerce and the exchange of ideas, commodities and culture. On the Egyptian coast of the Red Sea, archaeologists are currently excavating what’s believed to be the world’s oldest port. It dates back more than 4,500 years.

Port of San Diego Swears in New Executive Officers
New year, new executive officers, and a new theme for Board of Port Commissioners of the Port of San Diego. On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the Port of San Diego held its 2018 swearing-in ceremony at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier to swear in Rafael Castellanos as chairman, Garry J. Bonelli as vice chairman, and Ann Moore, who was not present during the ceremony, as secretary.

The Port of San Diego Welcomes its New Chairman
The Board of Port Commissioners swore in its 2018 officers at a luncheon ceremony on Tuesday at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Officers to sworn in included Rafael Castellanos, Chairman-elect; Garry J. Bonelli, Vice Chairman-elect and Ann Moore, Secretary-elect. Chairman-elect Castellanos presented his inauguration speech, highlighting the value of the Port’s contributions to the Blue Economy, including the Port’s ongoing aquaculture initiative to grow oysters; and an inspirational vision for harnessing the great potential of the Bay and the ocean.
